How to Get Married in Melbourne in Less Than One Month

So, you’re ready to tie the knot — but your timeline is a little tight due to travel or legal reasons. You might have a new job overseas. Either way, you’re wondering: Can we get married in less than one month?

The answer is a resounding yes! In fact, you can get married in Melbourne in as little as one-two business days if you meet the legal requirements. Let’s break it down so you can start planning your wedding with confidence — and without the stress.

There are only 5 criteria allowed for the shortening of the one months notice waiting period.

  • Job related issues, for example, having to move to a country where applying for the spouse visa needs you to be married,

  • Medical reasons, eg, there may be a terminal illness with a spouse or family member,

  • Wedding plans have been made but you didn't know you had to have the form done

  • Going to jail or other legal issues.

  • The celebrant made a mistake….(no we didn’t…lol.)

We can help you and guide you through the process. Please note that Births Deaths & Marriages DO NOT grant an exemption for the one month waiting period to be waived if you are applying for an Australian visa or are pregnant.

Step 1: File Your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)

The first step in the marriage process is submitting your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) form to us, your celebrant. The NOIM must be lodged at least one month before your wedding day.

This form is simple and only requires a few details about you and your partner, such as:

  • Full names

  • Addresses

  • Date of birth

  • Place of birth

  • Your legal status (whether you’re single, divorced, or widowed)

Important Note:
You can submit the NOIM via email, and both partners must sign it in front of an authorized witness (e.g., a celebrant, lawyer, or police officer). If you're planning on marrying soon, make sure you get this done ASAP.

Step 2: Choose Your Wedding Package and Date

Once the NOIM is lodged and processed, it’s time to book your preferred wedding date.

At Registry Weddings, we offer simple, stress-free registry-style weddings that allow you to marry on short notice. Our team is here to help you pick a date that works — even if it’s only a few days away!

Step 3: Get Your Legal Documents Ready

Before your ceremony, you’ll need to have some key documents prepared:

  • Proof of identity (usually a passport or birth certificate)

  • If either partner has been married before, you’ll also need to show your divorce decree absolute or the death certificate of your former spouse.

If you're planning to marry quickly, it's important to have all your paperwork organized and ready to go. We recommend getting this sorted ahead of time to avoid any last-minute delays.

Step 4: The Big Day!

Once the paperwork is all set, it’s time to get married! Whether you choose to marry in our beautiful Melbourne venue, or go for something more private at your home, we’ll guide you through the ceremony, making sure it’s smooth, legal, and full of meaningful moments.

Remember, your ceremony can be just the two of you and a couple of guests to witness your vows. And if you don’t have witnesses lined up, don’t worry — we can provide them for you!
