Frequently Asked Questions About Getting Married in Melbourne
-
By law, you must give at least one month's notice to be married, and that waiting period starts when we receive your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) form, duly witnessed by a police officer, doctor, lawyer, JP, or us as your celebrant. We can witness you signing the NOIM form over Zoom, FaceTime or WhatsApp. You don't need a wedding date straight away. You can submit the NOIM form now and confirm your date later. It helps to start the waiting period as soon as possible.

The two required witnesses don't have to be Australian citizens or residents. Anyone can be a witness, even two strangers we can arrange for you. They just need to be over 18 and understand English. We don't need identification from them.

It's very important that the correct documents are supplied before the wedding, or the marriage cannot be conducted. We must sight Australian or International passports (expired is okay), OR birth certificates (translated into English by a NAATI-accredited translator) along with drivers licences or photo ID. If either partner has been previously married, we also need proof of how the previous marriage ended: a Divorce Certificate or Death Certificate.

We offer flexible pricing based on project type and complexity. After an initial conversation, we’ll provide a transparent quote with no hidden costs.

Choose your date on our booking page. No payment is required to secure it. We'll then send you an invoice for a $150 booking deposit, payable within 7 days by credit or debit card. This deposit is included in your ceremony fee, not an extra charge on top of it.
We'll also send you the NOIM form to complete online. If you have any concerns about the payment timeline, let us know and we can work with you.

Just bring a drivers licence or photo ID. We don't need the original NOIM form or your passports on the day.
-
Of course. This is one of the beauties of a civil ceremony: you can tailor it to your needs and include as much or as little religious content as you wish. Our wedding chapel is non-religious and open to all couples, and there will be no religious component unless you specifically want one.
-
Just bring your vows with you on the day. Our Personalised Wedding package also includes your own story and music choices for a fully tailored ceremony.
-
Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. You don't have to wear a wedding dress and suit, especially for a small Legals Only wedding. Many couples do dress up in full bridal attire, but that's entirely up to you.
We also have couples in casual wear for overseas ceremonies. If you're unsure, a good guide is to dress as you would for a nice restaurant dinner.
-
Exchanging rings is a personal choice, not a compulsory part of the ceremony. Whether you exchange rings is entirely up to you.
-
Yes, we're happy to include a bridal party. They can walk down the aisle and either stand at the front with you or take a seat.
-
Cancellation 10 days or more before the wedding: the fee paid will be refunded, less a $150 charge, as we will have already lodged your paperwork with Births, Deaths and Marriages. If your legal work has already been approved and printed, a $225 fee applies instead, with the balance refunded.
Cancellation within 10 days of the wedding: no refund applies, as significant work has already been completed and other bookings declined. If payment hasn't been made and you cancel within 10 days, a $225 fee will be invoiced.
-
One free date change is included, provided you reschedule at least 10 days before your existing date. Subsequent changes incur a $40 fee. If you reschedule after your legal documents have been signed off for printing, a $75 fee applies to cover reproducing and reprinting the documents.

We're set up for simple, intimate ceremonies and don't have glasses or plates for champagne or cake, and we run multiple weddings a day, so we ask that the carpet stays clean. You're welcome to use the outdoor tables on the ground floor after your ceremony.
-
We prefer pets stay out of the ceremony chapel itself, but small, well-looked-after pets are generally welcome. As we often have weddings booked right after yours, please contact us in advance to discuss bringing your pet.
